STAND UP TO CANCER

STAND UP TO CANCER, featured by the Entertainment Industry Foundation - Hollywood's leading charity, first launched in 2008. Easily, a favorite event of mine. The special unites celebrities, cancer survivers, and a national audience in a powerful night for cancer awareness. This year, it was broadcast on all major news channels, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox on Friday, Sept. 10th. 100% of the donations go to cancer research (the website is still accepting donations). To date, over $100 million dollars have been raised. If you missed the show, it will be streamed on the SU2C website, along with many other videos and ways to join the fight. Awesome event for a great cause. SPREAD THE LOVE

LOANS THAT CHANGE LIVES

I ran across an email from last Christmas season. I received the email from a friend about Kiva. My friend helped with a loan in Cambodia to help build a home. Borrowing the description from the website, "Kiva's mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty. Kiva empowers individuals to lend to an enterpreneur across the globe." Basically, when you visit the website you can lend to someone in a different part of the globe - someone who needs a loan for their buisness. Someone might raise goats or sell veggies at their local market. You can learn about the person you are lending to, how they plan to use the loan, and receive updates.

When the entrepreneur pays back their loan you get your money back. It may seem like a risky investment but when you are helping to invest in someone's livihood your assistance may help them get through enough time to get on their feet again. Sounds like a gift that keeps on giving :)

Loomstate offers an organic collection. I learned about the brand from the Power 100 conference with The ONE Campaign this month. They are a leader in the fashion industry that is doing good. (from Target to Barneys)

The ONE Campaign

The ONE Campaign is a global organization comprised of many amazing resources and information, and simply describing it through a Blog post does not do it justice. Check out the link to the webpage to read more about the organization, backed by more than 2 million people, that is changing lives, literally. This non-profit offers an abundance of information on issues from poverty to preventable disease, an updated Blog, and how to support the fight to end extreme poverty. ONE has many partner organizations, is non-profit, and non-partisan.

I first heard about the campaign after seeing a PSA in high school. I was first attracted by the celebrities speaking in the commercial (U2's Bono helped create ONE), and today I am passionate about the issues. Some of the world's most impoverished people live in Africa; however, issues affect our global community. These issues range from child and maternal health, clean water, sustainability, HIV/AIDS, education, and more...

Find something to be PASSIONATE about.
